Container Moodysson has made two great films–Together and Lilya 4-ever. This, though, is hardly a film. Its more an audio novel, a monologue about gender, religion and death. The arbitrary visuals in flickering, grainy monochrome show decaying food and buildings and two people, mostly in foetal postures. Its a draining, inert experience, an immersion in depression that offers no way out.
WHILE PLACING A LID ONTO A SHARPS CONTAINER FOR DISposal, a housekeeper received a needle-stick injury. He said he had to use extra force to push the lid down because the container was overfilled. Another housekeepers finger was stuck when she removed a filled sharps container from a wall bracket. The needle was protruding from the front wall of the container, which was filled beyond the recommended fill line. Concrete BlockConcrete mortar was used by the Romans as early as 200 B.C. to bind shaped stones together in the construction of buildings. During the reign of the Roman emperor Caligula, in 37-41 A.D. , small blocks of precast concrete were used as a construction material in the region around present-day Naples, Italy. Much of the concrete technology developed by the Romans was lost after the fall of the Roman Empire in the fifth century. It was not until 1824 that the English stonemason Joseph Aspdin developed portland cement, which became one of the key components of modern concrete.The first hollow concrete block was designed in 1890 by Harmon S. Palmer in the United States. After 10 years of experimenting, Palmer patented the design in 1900. Palmers blocks were 8 in (20.3 cm) by 10 in (25.4 cm) by 30 in (76.2 cm), and they were so heavy they had to be lifted into place with a small crane. Abstract This paper argues that hypnotherapy is a potentially effective adjunct to complementary medicine. Using existing research and professional publications, the paper considers the impact hypnosis could make as an adjunct to complementary medicine. Morgan D. (1996). The principles of hypnotherapy. Bradford UK: Eilidon Press. The book is divided into three parts. Part A consisting of 9 chapters covers foundational material on systems theory and how that can be applied to organic systems and to hypnosis. It discusses positive feedback loops that amplify the process and negative feedback loops that subdue the process. Positive feedback amplification can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether increasing the effect is desired, while negative feedback calming can be either beneficial or harmful depending on whether decreasing the effect is desired. Morgan focuses on the activity of a system, the activity of its component subsystems, or the activity of the supersystem of which the system is a component. His main theoretical focus is on whether the activity of the system is increasing, decreasing, or staying the same, as other components change in specified ways. Hypnosis is described in systems terms, not as a “state,” but rather in terms of what system or subsystem components are changed, either increased or decreased, during trance induction, deepening, maintenance, trance work, and termination. He uses simple symbols to represent activities in quasi-mathematical style, which is helpful. Some of the letter symbols are used for different activities in different parts of the book. It would have been easier to follow if given letter symbols had been used more consistently to represent single specific activities. Some of his textual references to others publications are found in the bibliography at the end of the book, but some are unfortunately not present in the bibliography. He goes through common hypnotic tests in Chapter 8 and inductions in Chapter 9 explaining them in systems terms. This does produce some greater conceptual clarity with respect to subsystem component activities during hypnosis. Part B consisting of 6 chapters is the central discussion on what the systems approach can teach us about hypnotherapy. Chapter 10 discusses the matter of diagnosis in systems terms looking at precursors, problems, and resultants, and how they change with respect to one another. Chapter 11 focuses on positive and negative feedback loops in organic systems including behavioral, emotive, and cognitive. The vicious circle is a positive feedback loop with harmful consequences. Thinking in systems terms may make needed changes clearer to the therapist. Chapter 12 looks at the consequences of symptom reduction. The remaining three chapters in this part examine making changes by choosing the appropriate positive feedback loops to amplify desired effects and the appropriate negative feedback loops to quiet undesired effects, planning the changes, and reinforcing the changes by selecting natural reinforces.

When the Baby-Boomer generation started hitting age 50, interest in long-term care insurance jumped. Is this huge demographic group just thinking about itself? While theres obviously an element of self-interest, boomers are at the age when their parents need care and are confronted with the reality of the costs. We read that current nursing home care prices range from $54,000 to $90,000 a year, but we dont react until it impacts us. While its clear that home care is preferred, possible Medicare changes may very well be on the way that will reduce home health benefits. Legislation is pending in Washington that would reduce Medicare home-care expenditures either by capping benefits or by restricting eligibility. The proposals aim at curbing home-care benefits that have soared over the past several years as a direct result of shorter and shorter hospital stays. These prospects make supplemental home healthcare benefit considerations more pertinent than ever. Its not safe to assume that home health care costs will somehow be lower than nursing home care. Because of this dont automatically opt for home-care benefits that are less than those for nursing home care.

Policies for LTC provide insurance coverage for times when an individual cannot independently manage the essential activities of daily living (ADLs). CarpetThe first carpets of note were woven by nomads. The thick carpets were easy to transport and were placed over the sand floor of tent dwellings. Early looms were similarly easy to transport. Two forked branches were joined by a crosspiece holding the suspended warp, and a wooden bar was used to flatten binding weft threads, while the loose warp ends formed the carpets pile. The Pazyryk carpet has been documented as the earliest hand loom carpet, dating back from 500 B.C. and discovered in a tomb located in the Alti Mountains in Central Asia.From these early beginnings, carpet weaving rose to its highest art form in Turkey, Iran, India, and China. Using cotton, linen, or hemp as the foundation, and wool or silk as the luxurious pile, weavers would make a knot out of the pile thread, then form a row of knots that was tightly beaten down. The process was time-consuming: some of the finest handmade carpets have as many as 2,400 knots per square inch (372 knots per sq cm). The brilliant colors of these ancient carpets came from natural dyes such as madder, indigo, genista, woad, and ocher. Some weavers added alum to these dyes to fix the color, and a few wove gold and precious jewels into their carpets.

Childrens ClothingIn the United States, a wide range of social changes impacted childrens clothes. The sewing machine (both home and factory varieties) eased the burden of sewing clothes for the family, and, by the Civil War, paper patterns were readily available for childrens clothes. The Civil War itself changed childrens garments because standard sizes of uniforms were made for soldiers. Soon, all clothing was sized, and styles for children began to differ because of size ranges. Transportation methods diversified and necessitated new clothing styles. Sports clothes were developed with train travel in mind, and tailored suits for girls and box coats for boys were made specifically for travel. The bicycle and the baby carriage were both popular by mid-century, and clothes for children to wear while riding were created. Dolls and paper dolls became popular toys, and, as the shape of the baby doll changed from a diminutive grown-up to a more baby-like shape, costumes for both real babies and their toy counterparts were modified to suit babys needs. Bonnets as absolutes for American girls also dropped out of fashion when the Civil War eliminated cotton production.By the 1870s, styles had again become very restrictive. Young girls wore laced and boned corsets to shape their waists from an early age even though doctors had become aware of the damage caused to growing bones, circulation, and breathing. Children also wore mourning clothes complete with veils. Girls being sent to boarding school had all the accoutrements of their mothers including fans, stockings, pantaloons, bustles, and feathered hats. Starched clothing appeared neater and cleaner, so shirts and dresses were stiff to the point of discomfort. Changes were beginning to occur rapidly in clothing manufacture, however, as the long centuries of handmade clothes gave way to factory-made garments. Those factory-made garments were also available to any-one with a mail-order catalog.
ITS HARD to believe that in a materialistic, fashion-driven country such as ours that anyone would say there is no choice on the store shelves. But, in fact, sisters Laurie Ivry and Julie Drummond complained of just that when they, out of the blue one day three years ago, decided to start a childrens clothing store. Red Wagon stores in Berkeley and Lafayette are the products of their frustration with the marketplace. Although Red Wagon serves both boys and girls, the retailers went a long way to solving a common conflict between mothers and daughters as well.

After reading about second homes in the March issue (The Good Life, page 76), here are my thoughts about this market. After the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, another pattern has become more pronounced. In past years many of our clients building South Carolina vacation homes were from Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, as well as Boston. Since that terrible day we still see the people in this market building vacation homes, but more of them are doing so closer to home. Our Rhode Island office has seen an increase in vacation home business while our South Carolina office has seen a decrease. Owners would rather drive a few hours to their vacation home than have to fly there. As far as design trends are concerned, the vacation homes we design in Rhode Island ate definitely for the entire family and not just for the husband and wife, which is more common with our Southern projects. The vacation home communities in Rhode Island where weve worked are places that the same families have been going to for decades or generations. In South Carolina the communities are new, and there is not the same sense of attachment to the place or the same sense of community.

Alaska Diesel Electric, Seattle, Wash., has been building small heavy-duty marine and industrial generator sets since 1963. To meet increasing demands for high quality electrical output they have developed a new generator called the PXK line. This generator will first be featured in the new model M843JK gen-set rated 10 kW. A three-cylinder, water-cooled Lugger diesel drives the newly designed generator at 1800 rpm and the unit is also available at 8 kW for 1500 rpm, 50 Hz/240 V output.This year, several other models utilizing the new generator end are also being introduced, including 8, 12, 16, 20 and 32 kW (1800 rpm/60 Hz ratings) marine and industrial sets.A key design objective was to increase performance without increasing generator set length. Alaska Diesel engineers reported that the new generator design has actually decreased overall generator set length in several configurations. For example, length of the 8 kW model has gone from 35.2 in. to 32.5 in.; the 12 kW set from 38.1 in. to 36.6 in.; and the 20 kW set from 47.7 in. to 43.4 in.New design features include the addition of more copper throughout the generator to increase efficiency and motor starting capability. The additional copper also holds temperature rise to 95 [degrees] C to extend generator life in high heat environments such as inside sound shields housed in relatively small engine rooms.

As a dog trainer one of the most common things I get asked about is how to train a dog to come back when called. It is so sad that some people just cant let their dogs off the lead for fear of it taking two hours to catch the dog or, worse still, the dog running off to either be killed on the road, harass someone or never be seen again. (There are exceptions such as dogs with severe aggression problems or strong specific breed characteristics.) If a dog is dangerously out of control in a public place then the owner or the person in charge of the dog is guilty of an offence. The definition of a public place is any street, road or other place to which the public have, or are permitted to have, access. This is a wide definition of a public place and one, which specifically includes the common parts of a building containing two or more dwellings.
Police are looking for empty buildings to train dogs in. Officers particularly need premises in Sunderland, Washington and South Tyneside. They need vacant properties to use to train dogs to search premises for missing people or to locate a suspect.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Some compare todays coastal housing market, where prices increased the most, to the investment craze that led to the technology stock crash a few years ago. Home prices in some regions have more than doubled in the past five years, leading to concerns that the speculative bubble might burst. There have also been record levels of conversion of apartments into condominiums in many areas of the country as demand for homeownership has also led to increased demand for condominiums. Investors can earn a greater profit by selling apartments as condos rather than renting apartments. In markets like Miami, where the condo market has been particularly hot, some units have even changed hands the same day as speculators have been buying many of the condos. The bad news for homeowners in Indiana is that they have not seen their home values rise like many other areas of the country. The Indianapolis areas home prices grew at nearly the slowest pace of the top fifty markets, or 19 percent during the past five years. Homeowners in the Boston and San Diego areas saw their homes appreciate more than 75 percent during the same period. The good news is what has not gone up will probably not go down. That is, home prices in Indiana are not likely to fall with a possible drop in prices in those areas of the country that may be experiencing a bubble. So there is less risk associated with purchasing a home in Indiana compared to many other areas of the country. This also makes homes in Indiana relatively affordable compared to many other areas.

Part 1 contains descriptions of different types of movement, which lead to the authors definition of migration itself. Five attributes are argued to be key to the recognition and identification of migration as a `distinct and specialized behavior: (i) persistent movement, (ii) `straightened out movement, (iii) movement undistracted by resources that would normally halt it, (iv) distinct departure and arrival actions, and (v) energy must be reallocated to sustain it. This sensible and pragmatic approach only can be considered a plus; this is an `interdisciplinary problem in behavior if there ever was one, and such problems benefit from broad perspectives. Thus the authors greater goal of forging `common conceptual ground for workers in this area will be aided by this book. Some arguments, however, may obfuscate this goal, such as including certain plants and fungi as migrants. This section concludes with examples of migratory behavior and a review of methods apropos to study in the lab and/or field. Part 2 focuses on proximate factors and migration. It begins with a helpful review of atmospheric and oceanic currents, and then presents examples of the abilities of certain organisms to use these abiotic elements to aid their travels. Other proximate factors discussed include, for example, neural and endocrine factors, some neural and sensory processes, environmental stimuli and endogenous and exogenous rhythms, and general regulatory integration. We found it interesting to learn the extent to which the regulatory physiology of different kinds of animal migrants can be so similar, even across broad taxonomic boundaries. The discussion of biomechanical and bioenergetic constraints likewise was interesting. Surprisingly, there was little discussion about overland migration, nor was there any discussion of bats in the section devoted to “Ecology and Wing Morphology.” Many taxa of bats are among the most fascinating migrants in nature.

John Osbornes first play, Look Back in Anger, had its premiere in 1956 and he called it a formal, old-fashioned play. His second play, The Entertainer, was set during the Suez Crisis and opened in 1957. What was new about both was that the characters were real working-class people. No real parts had been written about working- class characters before - only “cheeky chappy” roles such as Doolittle in Pygmalion. When asked if I wanted to go to see The Entertainer I was uncertain. Why? I had worked backstage on a brilliant amateur production (by the Tavistock Rep) in 1969 and it had stayed in my mind, with few productions since to affect the fond memories. How wrong I was to hesitate. For me this production, under Sean Holmess direction, ticks all the boxes and putting it on 50 years after it was set is brilliant timing. So much of it resonates in 2007: a misguided war in the Middle East and young men dying needlessly; the obsession with skinny/size zero women; fading performers (or “personalities”) trying to reinvent themselves; feelings against politicians of either party; comments about the Poles and the Irish; and confusion over national identity.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. That, however, is not a reason to not seek certification. The committee recognizes that few lawyers are likely to possess specific and detailed expertise in each of the many subjects that fall within the scope of real estate.

Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). That article discussed the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on medical error, “To Err Is Human,” and the erosion of public trust in U.S. health care.
Health Alliance Medical Plans last month announced its coverage of two over-the-counter drugs formerly available by prescription only: Wyeths Alavert and Procter Gambles Prilosec OTC. Health Alliance will require members who have prescription drug benefits to obtain a written prescription from their physicians for the new over-the-counter drugs in order to receive coverage. The news at Health Alliance follows Medco Health Solutions expansion of its Generics First program in June to include Wyeths analgesic Advil and allergy remedy Alavert.

Dairy companies are getting in on the campaign to improve childrens nutrition by exploiting sales via vending machines. At a dairy industry seminar hosted by The Dairy Council last week, delegates heard that a dairy product vending machine pilot project in South Wales had generated profits. The BBC childrens soap, Grange Hill, is set to feature a dairy product vending machine between April and November 2006.
Vending MachineVending accounts for a significant portion of the sales and profits of beverage bottlers and snack makers. In 2000, vending machines generated 14% of total foodservice sales in venues such as college campuses, factories, businesses, hospitals, and schools. Bottlers pay colleges, schools, and other institutions millions of dollars for exclusive rights to place vending machines on campuses. Vended soft drink sales may represent only as much as 15% of a bottlers total yearly sales, but that same volume could easily account for half of their annual profits.

Now that Baby Bullet express service is off and running in the San Francisco Bay Area, Caltrains engineering and construction team is turning its attention to other improvements, such as upgrading station amenities and making stations safer and more accessible. Caltrain recently kicked off the next phase of construction on the first maintenance facility in Caltrains 142-year history. During the coming year, crews will complete the construction of the $140-million facilitys tunnel and will begin work on the repair shop, which will increase the speed of repair work, storage tracks with ground power and a new indoor train washer, which will replace the portable machine now in use. Currently routine maintenance is done at a small, outdated train yard in San Jose and at the San Francisco station. Construction crews are in the midst of digging a pedestrian tunnel, which will allow workers to move between the shop and a new operations building. The construction of the maintenance shop should begin this Summer. The final phase of CEMOF is the construction of a new three-story operations building and one-story control facility, which will accommodate train dispatchers and other key staff.
